Theories
Theory of social ties - grassroots ties and regime ties. If a small oppressed group has social ties and also has ties with ruling elite and security appartus, then this group seeking rights and autonomy is more likely to engage in unarmed resistance. Slobodan Milosevic in Serbia was overthrown by a pro-democracy movement. In 2005, when they gathered in the capital Belgrade to demand he step down, he and his wife ordered the capital police to crack down. The police officers had their own children amongst the protesters. So the crack down failed.
