Asking the Russian Government for Guidance on Outreach

Respected Government of the Russian Federation,

Please forgive me that I do not speak Russian. Only recently have I started to learn. I will write my letter in English and translate it for you. You may write to me in Russian.

I want to reach out to Russian thinkers. I ask you for your guidance on the proper ways to do this. Fighting is taking place in the territories claimed by Russia and Ukraine. What can individuals do to resolve this conflict? I wish to work with Russian individuals to develop solutions.

Imagine that millions of individuals around the world worked together for peace. We would certainly succeed to end this violence, overcome our divisions and grow as friends. Even ten individuals could work together and show the way. It is important that they show good will and that they represent different perspectives.

But do we know how to do this? I have experience as a peacemaker. Practically, it means to look at everything from our enemy's point of view.

I was born in the USA. I live in Lithuania. I am a dual citizen. I am taught that Russia is the enemy. How can I love my enemy? I should be straightforward, proceed step-by-step, be vulnerable, let them win, let them teach me, stick to my principles and have something to share.

I am having difficulty finding individuals to work together for peace. I think that people are afraid, suspicious, skeptical, cynical and pessimistic. Yet I am encouraged by the Russian Constitution.

"We, the multinational people of the Russian Federation, united by a common fate on our land, establishing human rights and freedoms, civic peace and accord, preserving the historically established state unity, proceeding from the universally recognized principles of equality and self-determination of peoples, revering the memory of ancestors who have conveyed to us the love for the Fatherland, belief in the good and justice, reviving the sovereign statehood of Russia and asserting the firmness of its democratic basic, striving to ensure the well-being and prosperity of Russia, proceeding from the responsibility for our Fatherland before the present and future generations, recognizing ourselves as part of the world community, adopt the CONSTITUTION OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION."

The people of the Russian Federation are multinational. They establish human rights and freedom. They recognize the equality and self-determination of peoples. They love the Fatherland and take responsibility for it. They think of past and present and future generations. They recognize themselves as part of the world community. This all reflects the noble interests of the Russian peoples. Indeed, their leadership is in all of our interest.

Clearly, Russian individuals can act as world leaders. But they do not want to be traitors. They do not want to be understood as traitors. Thus the Constitution establishes a Government which provides leadership. I therefore write to you.

Specifically, I make these requests.

1) I request that you reply with a statement that you do not object to participation by Russian citizens in the Math 4 Wisdom community, including our discussion group, so that together we may develop and apply wisdom and mathematics, especially for mutual understanding and responsible activity, in the spirit of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

2) I request that you reply with a statement that you do not object to participation by Russian citizens in the Mathstodon community for the mathematical sciences, with the purpose of thinking out loud for personal development and scientific collaboration, but also for mutual understanding and responsible activity, in the spirit of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

3) I request that you recommend one or more institutions to which I might write for help to find thinkers in the Russian Federation who would like to participate at these forums. One such institution could be the National Committee of Mathematicians of Russia in the Russian Academy of Sciences.

4) I request that you indicate an official contact in the Russian Federation with whom I and others could seek clarification to assure that such participation and related activity manifest the noble spirit of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
